I often reflect on the relationship between leadership, the heart and the brain. I ask myself why leadership is more about the heart and gut. Less about ‘head stuff’. Now I am beginning to know why and science is backing me up.
Like me, I’m sure you believe it is the brain is the key controller of emotions. Not so.
According to Dr Rollin McCraty in “Heart-Brain Neurodynamics: The Making of Emotions“,
The heart is a key component of the emotional system, thus providing a physiological basis for the long-acknowledged link between the heart and our emotional life.
This has a huge impact on leaders and the key reason at Bridgeworks that we measure the impact we have on the people we work with and lead.
Changing Our Leadership Style And Our Impact On Others
Recently a client mentioned that it was the “How Others See me” feedback shared at a past program that completely turned her career around. It was clear that previously she was an arrogant manager that built fear into her team and dictating the terms. Now team members openly express how they are more creative and engaged because of her new style of proactive leading and more engaging
Namely, do people see us as ‘reactive managers’ or ‘proactive leaders’?
If the way they see us is not contributing to our success as a team, it is up to us to change that. And we can. In fact it is easier than you may think. Typically we help our clients in 2 steps with a range of proven processes and tools:
A kick-start workshop like LeadershipNow, or TeamFixer where participants discovering the difference between how we see ourselves and how others see us and where they experience practical ways to change results.
Follow-up coaching and mentoring to facilitate and embed more effective behaviours as leaders and as team members, and to nurture an engaged culture.
