We love our kids. So much so that we are killing them. Literally.
A couple of years ago I sent my 17-year-old son Zac off on a 26 day ‘Summit to Sea’ Outward Bound course. He left as a boy and came home a young man.
Zac continually had to dig deep and believe that he could conquer even the most difficult situations. There was no-where to hide. It was a tough experience and the changes in him were palpable. What a leadership development experience teaching him team skills, resilience & belief in himself!
About the same time my wife Susan also decided to take on the Outward Bound challenge. Even today she continues to draws on the life skills she learnt.
We are building a risk adverse & politically correct world where we continue to wrap our children in cotton wool. We need to arm them with the skills to boldly face the challenges of a changing and complex world.
For goodness sakes, take them camping or at least get them away from the computer and into the park. It will make a world of difference!!
